* A SCARCE 38-BORE PERCUSSION TRANTER'S PATENT TRIGGER-COCKING REVOLVER, serial no. 5702,
circa 1857, with 7 1/4in. octagonal barrel, engraved band at muzzle and scroll engraving at throat, dove-tailed fore-sight (blade lacking), border engraved top-strap with standing notch rear-sight, borderline and scroll engraved frame with inverted 'Y' shaped safe spring, borderline engraved five-shot cylinder with milled band to leading edge, spur-less hammer with patent trigger-cocking mechanism, semi saw-handled chequered walnut grip and moulded and engraved iron butt-cap, traces only of finish, stud for rammer and rammer absent

Provenance:
This revolver belonged to Henry Foster Varty (1863-1945) and apparently obtained in some form of duel. Henry was born in Rietvlei, Umvoti, KawaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Henry fought in the Second Anglo Boer War in the division known as "Murray's Horse". He was entitled to the South Africa Medal.

Legend has it that the last remaining lion in the Umvoti region was hunted by a member of the Varty family in the last years of the 1800s. The Varty family have been well respected and widely known in the local community and have contributed to conservation projects worldwide. They still actively farm on the original land owned by the family for over 120 years, with several generations having passed through the farms gates and grown old on the very land of their forefathers. Since 1993, the revolver has been owned by Christopher Campbell Henderson, grandson of the original Varty and who was bequeathed it on his grandfather's death
