GEORGE GIBBS, BRISTOL
AN UNUSUAL 20-BORE PERCUSSION BOXLOCK SIDE-HAMMER WEDGE-FRAME BELT PISTOL, no visible serial number,
circa 1852, with 3 7/8in. twist barrel of slightly tapering round form, carved and moulded top-rib signed 'GIBBS, BRISTOL', bead fore-sight, notch rear-sight, carved and moulded fence to the nipple boss, border and scroll engraved boxlock action with radiused edges, replacement side-hammer with bolted safe to rear (thumb-piece lacking), a small vertical through wedge forward of the hammer allowing removal of the barrel via a hooked breech, belt-hook to left side of action, finely chequered walnut grip with flared pommel and fitted with an iron cap with central trap, guarded trigger and captive iron ramrod
Provenance: The reason for this unusual take-down method is unclear, but it is possible the pistol was originally supplied with interchangeable barrels, perhaps of different bores, lengths or even rifled
