JAMES PURDEY & SONS
A BRASS-CORNERED OAK AND LEATHER GUNCASE,
fitted for 30in. barrels, red baize-lined interior, lid with some mothing and 'Charges for Breech-Loading Gun No. 10172', central push-button brass lock (no key)

Provenance: We are kindly informed by the makers that gun No. 10172 was built for George Robinson, 1st Marquess of Ripon.

George Frederick Samuel Robinson, 1st Marquess of Ripon, KG, GCSI, CIE, VD, PC (24 October 1827 - 9 July 1909), styled Viscount Goderich from 1833 to 1859 and known as the Earl of Ripon in 1859 and as the Earl de Grey and Ripon from 1859 to 1871, was a British politician and Viceroy and Governor General of India who served in every Liberal cabinet between 1861 and 1908. A keen sportsman, like his son, the famed shot Frederick Oliver Robinson (2nd Marquess of Ripon, GCVO, FRS (29 January 1852 - 23 September 1923), styled Viscount Goderich between 1859 and 1871 and Earl de Grey between 1871 and 1909), he was a regular client at James Purdey & Sons.

Further research undertaken by Dr Nicholas A. Harlow on the guns of the Ripon's makes reference to 10172, "built originally for stock in 1878 with full choke in both barrels, this was entirely taken out in August 1880 to create a shot-and-ball gun, with a flush sight for 65 yards fitted into the rib.".
