with 32in. replacement barrel possibly for target shooting, with dovetailed block and blade front-sight of non regulation pattern, replacement Mauser type tangent rearsight, the action stamped on the left-side "PEABODY'S PAT, / JULY 22 1862 / MANU'F'D BY / PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. / PROV. R. I." back-action lock plain and unmarked, iron mounted two piece walnut stock, the forend (loose) cut back with one barrel band. The Peabody features a tilting block action operated by an underlever and fitted with an external lock and hammer, it is regarded as being the forerunner of the Martini.
