with 32in. replacement barrel possibly for target shooting, with dovetailed block and blade front-sight of non regulation pattern, replacement Mauser type tangent rearsight, the action stamped on the left-side "PEABODY'S PAT, / JULY 22 1862 / MANU'F'D BY / PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. / PROV. R. I." back-action lock plain and unmarked, iron mounted two piece walnut stock, the forend (loose) cut back with one barrel band. The Peabody features a tilting block action operated by an underlever and fitted with an external lock and hammer, it is regarded as being the forerunner of the Martini. Switzerland purchased approx 5000 for issue to its forces prior to the adoption of the Vetterli. Barrel and action polished bright
