J.W. LAIRD 20-BORE BOXLOCK NON-EJECTOR, serial no. 27698, circa 1930, 28in. nitro reproved barrels (in 2023), the rib engraved 'J.W. LAIRD & CO. 6 BISHOPS GATE ST. WITHOUT. LONDON.' and with acanthus scroll detailing at the breech-end, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. and 1/4 choke, automatic safety with inlaid 'SAFE' detail, border, acanthus scroll and floral bouquet engraving, retaining much renewed colour-hardening and finish, 14 1/4in. stock including 1/2in. wooden extension and buttplate, Hackett-type snap-on fore-end, weight 5lb. 8oz., in a brass-cornered leather guncase with some accessories

Provenance: The vendors have kindly provided us with the following information:

The gun belonged to John Scott Kelsall (it is his plaque on the case). It was his favourite and he learned to shoot with it and also taught his son David (my father) to shoot with that gun. John was known by friends and family as 'Jack'.
He was born in 1900 and died in 1970.
He was a prominent and successful architect and he won the RIBA Soane medallion in 1924.
During the war, he worked in naval intelligence and I gather did extremely well although we never knew exactly what he did. He was also the person asked to drive the allies' car to the venue in Italy when the Italians signed their surrender which I believe was some kind of recognition of his key service.
