A FINE 16-BORE FLINTLOCK SINGLE-BARRELLED WHITE-METAL MOUNTED SPORTING GUN SIGNED ASTON, MANCHESTER, no visible serial number,
circa 1770, with two-stage 34in. slightly swamped iron barrel, white metal spider fore-sight, the breech section of barrel reeded for the first 13in. and with a carved girdle at the intersection, large gold poincon to top of breech relief embossed 'ASTON, MANCH'R' together with a crown device, iron top-tang with broad shallow sighting groove, large oval gold touch-hole, flat bevel edged plain lock signed in script 'ASTON' below the gold lined pan, stepped and pointed tail, roller frizzen, swan-necked cock, walnut full-stock with take-down fore-end and carved rococo apron around the top-tang, the handrail wrist with full dot and checkerboard Durs-style chequering, white metal furniture including border engraved heel-plate with a vase engraved to the short top-spur, engraved roll-edged tang-less trigger guard bow, rolled ended ramrod throat and two en-suite pipes, the fore-end with white metal facing plates at the join and ebony ramrod with replacement brass tip

Provenance: William Aston traded from 30 Market Street Manchester from 1769 until 1784 when he enrolled his son into the business. He continued to trade as Aston & Son from various addresses until 1824, finishing in King's Street
