33in. nitro barrels with broad raised matt rib, with banner engraved 'CHARLES BOSWELL. MAKER. 126. STRAND. LONDON. W.C.', large treble-grip action with automatic safety, silver-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, fully engraved with bold acanthus scrollwork with beaded borders and with finely engraved vignettes of goose and mallard, the underside with a spaniel retrieving duck, retaining traces of original colour-hardening and finish, 14 1/4in. well-figured semi-pistolgrip stock including 7/8in. rubber recoil pad, fore-end with grip-catch release lever, weight 14lb. 12oz., in its (damaged) brass-cornered canvas and leather case with three-piece cleaning rod with heads and a James Dixon & Sons wood and brass chamber bristle brush
Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this shotgun was completed in 1907 and was built by Samuel Harper of 126 Steelhouse Lane, Birmingham, and is shown in the records as an '8-bore Anson and Deeley action engraved with ducks and wildfowl, bored for 3 1/4in. "Perfects"'. Whilst is was Boswells who commissioned the gun it was actually sold by John Wilkes in the year of completion to a Neville Davies.
