A FINE PAIR OF LIGHTWEIGHT 12-BORE SINGLE-TRIGGER OVER AND UNDER SIDELOCK EJECTORS, serial no. 6113 / 4,
29in. nitro chopperlump barrels with no top-ribs, side-ribs, short sight flats gold-inlaid '1' and '2', over barrels engraved 'BOSS & CO. 13 DOVER STREET. PICCADILLY, LONDON. W.' and 'SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S PRESSED FLUID STEEL', 2 3/4in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and imp. cyl. choke, hold-open toplevers gold-inlaid '1' and '2', automatic safeties with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' details, incorporating Robertson and Henderson patent barrel locking action, patent no. 3307 of 10th February 1909, Boss patent improved ejector mechanisms patent no. 3308 of 10th February 1909, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, Boss improved patent single-triggers patent no. 11278 of 30th May 1905, rolled-edge triggerguards, best fine bouquet and scroll engraving, retaining much renewed colour-hardening and finish, 14in. replacement stocks, weight 6lb. 7oz., in a brass-cornered oak and leather case, the lid outer marked 'GARNET CLARK. BEENHAM COURT. NEWBURY', and with canvas and leather outer, the outer pocket initialled 'G.L.C.'
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the guns were completed on 5th December 1911 for a James R Hennessy. They confirm the barrels were completed as 29in. with very light choking, with 13 1/2in. stocks and weighing 6 1/2lbs.
James Richard Hennessy was born 1867 at Cherves Richemont, a small village near Cognac, into the great Cognac House that was founded in 1765 by the Irishman, Richard Hennessy.
Once his schooling had finished, Hennessy went to the French naval school and remained with the navy until 1893 when he left to return to Cognac and take the reins of the family business. He also enjoyed a successful political career which culminated in membership of the French Senate from 1921 until his death, aged 77 in May 1945.
