A 16-BORE SILVER-MOUNTED PERCUSSION SINGLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN SIGNED 'JOHN THOMSON', no visible serial number,
circa 1855, with re-browned round 30in. barrel, hooked breech with floral scroll engraved top-tang, border and gamescene engraved back-action lock signed 'JOHN THOMSON forwards of the base of the hammer, the gamescene depicting partridges in a grassland setting, walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist, sterling silver heel-plate from an earlier piece with martial trophy engraved to the heel-spur and hallmarked for London 1775, similarly hallmarked sterling silver trigger-guard tang, bow and acorn finial, the bow engraved with a rose-head, the tang marked '1 BATTN R.A. REGT R' with further letter or numbers obscured by the fixing screws, large pierced silver martial side-plate unusually applied to right hand side of butt, 2in. stock extension using the original wood, applied under-barrel rib with iron ramrod throat and two iron thimbles and probable original brass-mounted ramrod, iron surfaces cleaned with some loss to detail
