No.1 with 28in. nitro reproved chopperlump barrels, the rib engraved 'HENRY ATKIN (FROM PURDEY'S), 41 JERMYN ST. LONDON. S.W.' and gold-inlaid '1' at the breech end, No.2 with 28in. replacement nitro chopperlump barrels (by the makers), the tubes engraved 'HENRY ATKIN LTD. 7 BURY STREET. LONDON. S.W.1.' and gold-inlaid '2' at the breech end, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both (No.1) 1/4 and 1/2 choke (No.2), self opening actions, toplevers gold-inlaid '1' and '2', automatic safeties with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' details, removable striker discs, fine border, bouquet and scroll engraving, the undersides engraved 'HENRY ATKIN (FROM PURDEY'S), brushed bright and reblued finish, 14 3/4in. figured replacement stocks including 3/4in. leather covered recoil pads, weight 6lb. 8oz. (No.1) 6lb. 5oz. (No.2), in their brass-cornered oak and leather double guncase with internal protective flap
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that these guns were completed on the 12th May 1914 for a Capt. W.P. Standish, and that the barrels of the no.2 gun were replaced by them in 1974.
The vendor's research has established the following:
"William Percy Standish was commissioned in the 15th of Foot ( East Yorkshire Regiment) between 1881 and 1888. He was Lord of the Manor at Scaleby, near Carlisle, Cumberland, but lived at Marwell Hall, near Winchester. (now the site of Marwell Zoo) In 1902 he was High Sheriff of Cumberland and attended the Coronation of King Edward VII in that capacity. At the outbreak of WWI in 1914, he was recalled to the Army as a Captain, shortly afterwards to be made Acting Major in the Remount Service. He was a renowned huntsman, and Master of the Hursley Hambledon Hunt for some 21 years. "
