Provenance: The serial number of the gun dates it to approx. 1895

Other Notes: The Burgess Gun Company was founded by Andrew Burgess in 1893 to manufacture his patented repeating shotgun. It was manufactured for just six years, until production ceased when the company was sold to the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. in 1899. Approximately 6000 were produced.
Two variants were produced, the solid frame version and then a short barrelled folding version was introduced in 1895 (primarily aimed at the Prison Service, U.S. Marshalls, the Police Service and Express Messengers - although it also found favour with those operating on the other side of the Law). Records show that Pat Garrett owned a folding version, serial number 3019, which he had with him the day he was murdered.
