Product Details

ZELLER IN SALZBURG,
A 40-BORE WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLE, no visible serial number,
Austrian, circa 1690, with 29in. swamped octagonal blued sighted barrel signed 'ZELLER IN SALZBURG', flat lock with enclosed wheel and engraved with scrollwork and a scene with a castle on a hill, walnut full stock carved with scrollwork (butt-end renewed), horn fore-end cap, fluted sliding patchbox-cover, set triggers (front trigger incomplete), brass mounts, horn-tipped ramrod.

Other Notes: A number of gunmakers by the name of Zellner are recorded in Salzburg in the latter part of the 17th century and first half of the 18th century. The maker of this rifle is almost certainly a member of this dynasty of Austrian gunmakers. It is quite common in this period for several different spellings of the same name to appear.
