Product Details

A SCARCE .442 (CARBINE) SINGLE-SHOT SPORTING RIFLE, UNSIGNED, MODEL 'NEWARK'S PATENT', serial no. 5,
circa 1870, with octagonal damascus 28in. barrel, dove-tailed bead fore-sight, rear-sight with standing notch and two additional folding leaves, scroll engraved action and flip-open breech-block marked 'NEWARK'S PATENT', borderline and scroll engraved bar-action lock (traces of colour), engraved hammer (missing retaining screw), walnut chequered straight hand half-stock with iron furniture, moulded horn fore-end tip, some mild pitting and loss to detail

Other Notes: This rifle conforms to J. Newark's patent 2403 of 1867 for improvements to breech-loading rifles, especially converted muzzle-loaders. A variation of the Snider system, it uses an internal cam to operate a central running firing-pin whilst also locking the breech shut. The hammer does not actually strike anything and is simply there to assist cocking
