A RARE 56/50 (SPENCER) RIMFIRE REMINGTON SPLIT BREECH CARBINE, UNSIGNED, no visible serial number, circa 1865, with 20in. barrel with dovetailed pinched pattern front-sight and hinged two leaf battle-sight, the action fitted with a side-rib and ring, iron mounted full walnut stock the butt plate tang stamped "U.S", barrel and action to grey patina some staining and corrosion. The Remington Split Breech was the forerunner of the famed Rolling Block, the were made in two calibres .46 R/F and 56/50. This is one of 15,000 purchased by the U.S. government circa 1864/66 the sold back to Remington in 1870, who then promptly sold them on to France for use in the Franco-Prussian war.
