AN INTERESTING MODIFIED .54 STARR PATENT CAVALRY CARBINE OF THE U.S. CIVIL WAR, serial no. 8346 circa 1863, with 20 in. barrel fitted with block and blade front-sight, two leaf hinged battle-sight, the breech stamped "STARR'S PATENT / SEPT. 14TH 1858, and fitted with a saddle-ring, back-action lock marked "STARR ARMS CO / YONKERS N.Y." brass mounted two piece walnut stock, half forend with one spring retained barrel band. The carbine appears be a combination of percussion and cartridge parts possibly the barrel is rimmed at the breech and fitted with an extractor the breech block is in the original percussion configuration with the face of the breech block faced off to accommodate a standard type metallic cartridge, likely a contemporary modification by a gunsmith to accept a Maynard type cartridge which although a metallic self contained unit was fired by an external percussion cap. The barrel action and lock, to grey patina rusted overall.
