AN UNUSUAL CONTINENTAL FLAT MOTOR GUNCASE FOR A 12-BORE WITH THE BATTENBERG CORONET OVER 'MB' EMBOSSED ON THE LID,
likely of French manufacture, fitted for 30in. barrels with muzzle sleeve to sit above the stock, pale leather lined interior with flip top storage compartment, white metal clasps, central lock (no key), the front marked with a trademark 'AL' with a hunting horn and hound and 'Brevete S.G.D.G.', the strap configuration with integral handle, the left side with a James Purdey & Sons storage label dated 1953 and hand-written with 'PRINCE OF BATTENBERG' over previous storage labels, one reading 'PRINCE M. OF BATTENBERG . EMPTY 7/5/53' and 'SINGLE FLAT LEATHER CASE', the underside with an older label inked with 'Prince Maurice' over a faint crossed out name, virtually illegible but possibly 'H.H. Prince Alexander ......'
Provenance: The labelling to the case and the crest to the lid would likely refer to Prince Maurice of Battenberg KCVO (October 1891-October 1914), youngest grandchild to Queen Victoria.
Born and baptised at Balmoral Castle, he attended Wellington School before joining the King's Royal Rifle Corps. Serving as a Lieutenant during the First World War, he was killed in action at Zonnebeke in the centre of the Ypres Salient on the 27th October 1914. He is buried in the Ypres town cemetery with a standard Imperial War Graves Commission headstone
