A J.V. NEEDHAM 12-BORE 1865 PATENT SELF HALF-COCKING SIDELEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 4870, for 1874, 30in. black powder only bold damascus barrels (loose on action), rib engraved 'J.V. NEEDHAM. 27 CANNON ST. BIRMINGHAM.' and '2', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, action incorporating later modification Needham 1862 patent self half-cocking action, with retracting firing pins, patent no. 2709 of 20th October 1865, forward facing sidelever simultaneously operating external cams to cock the hammers whilst the internal spindle pushes back the pins as it rotates (right hammer not reaching half-cock via lever operation), non-rebounding locks, carved hammers with spurs of hare's-ear form, border and scroll engraving, 14 1/2in. stock including later buttplate, weight 6lb. 13oz.
