A FINE CASED PAIR OF 32-BORE PERCUSSION SAW-HANDLED DUELLING or TARGET PISTOLS SIGNED VAN WART SON & CO., LONDON, serial numbered 300,
circa 1835, with browned octagonal laminated 10in. barrels signed in script on the top-flats 'LONDON', white metal blade fore-sights, standing notch rear-sights, engraved colour hardened breech-blocks with gold lines, moulded and shallow fenced snails, border and scroll engraved shaped back-action colour hardened locks signed in script 'VAN WART SON & CO', dolphin headed hammers and sliding safes, walnut half-stocks with finely chequered full pistol grips banded in white metal at the heel and with central oval escutcheons to the flat bases (expert repairs to the 'saw' extensions), blued and engraved spurred trigger guard bows, single set triggers and brass tipped ramrod, one an expert replacement, complete with their original mahogany case with brass corners and inlaid fretwork to the lid, central escutcheon with flush fitting rectangular handle and 'fleur de lys' terminals, the interior lined in turquoise velvet and compartmented for these pistols together with a three-way flask, loading rod, ball-mould, turn-screw, nipple-key, cap-tin and oil-bottle

Provenance: The company Van Wart Son & Co. were mainly suppliers of gun parts to the Americas and despite signing their pieces 'London' were actually a Birmingham firm
