A FINE CASED PAIR OF DELUXE 12mm PERCUSSION CONTINENTAL TARGET PISTOLS, no visible serial numbers,
circa 1860, with blued octagonal 10 1/4in. rifled barrels, each with narrow multiple blind flutes commencing and terminating with a scrolled flourish, the top-flats marked in gilt script 'ACIER FONDU' at breech, the breech-blocks engraved with scrolled and bordered panels, moulded spiral nipple-bosses (some pitting to inner faces), dove-tailed bead fore-sights, adjustable notch rear-sights on the fully engraved top-tangs, each numbered respectively '1' & '2' in gold for the pair, border and gamescene engraved hump-backed locks with dipped tails, No. 1 engraved with a fox flushing a gamebird, No. 2 with a stag and a gamebird in a grassland setting, scroll engraved carved and moulded hammers, walnut half-stocks relief-carved with raised floral scroll-work to the fluted grips and fore-end tips, engraved and moulded butt-caps with central spires, spurred trigger guard bows, white-metal oval barrel-key escutcheons, both pistols with much finish remaining and in an unsigned brass strung walnut case, lined and compartmented in the Continental manner in red baize (the inside of the lid in red velvet), retaining a lidded corner compartment with turned ebony handle and a near full suite of original deluxe accessories including a spirally carved ebony leather-faced loading mallet, en-suite handled tools, diminutive powder flask, carved steel maintenance equipment (lacking turn-screw), the exterior with central lock and lid escutcheon engraved 'ANTONIN SAULTNER'
