AN EXTREMELY SCARCE 12-BORE 1872 PATENT 'INVERTED OPENING' SINGLE-BARRELLED HAMMERGUN, serial no. 5151,
circa 1887, 28in. black powder only bold twist barrel (loose in action), the flat breech end with later engraved 'F.W. LIGHTWOOD. BRIGG. GRIMSBY & MARKET RASEN.', 2 1/2in. chamber, bored approx. true cyl., Alfred Harris inverted opening design, patent no. 3327 of 9th November 1872, short left side pullback lever, characteristic bifurcated action body, the barrel opening chamber downwards through the underside of the action (then rotate the gun for loading), unsigned rebounding back-action lock, bold acanthus scroll engraving with fine foliate bordering, 13 3/4in. pistolgrip stock with fluted horn pistolgrip-cap and horn buttplate, weight 5lb.
