Product Details

A RARE PIONEER MACHETE KNIFE BY RABONE BROS & Co., BIRMINGHAM,
mid-19th Century, with 14in. single-edged blade, 2in. deep with shallow clipped point, stamped with the company trademark of a lion couchant over 'RABONE BROS. & Co / CAST STEEL' to one side, horn grips secured by four rivets, together with its original brown leather scabbard, staining to the blade, and trademark and script rubbed, some cracking to the grips but remain tight, scabbard worn with presumed loss of the throat fitting and loss to the point, 19in. overall

Provenance: Rabone Bros & Co. had premises at 297-299 Broad Street, Birmingham. The firm focused on markets in Central and South America, and the West Indies, especially Cuba, where they supplied equipment for the construction of their railways. The business expanded greatly during the late 1850s. In 1885 Rabone Bros & Co. was dissolved by mutual agreement and replaced by a new company with the same name. It would appear that they did not undertake the manufacture of knives, which were imported from suppliers in central Europe
