A RARE PIONEER SAWBACK SWORD/HANGER WITH LION-HEAD POMMEL,
circa 1830s-1840s, with 22in. slightly curved steel blade with a 13in. sawback and 8in. double-edge ending in a spear-point, ricasso stamped 'T. CRAD...' [remainder rubbed out], brass hilt with quillioned cross-guard and bowed guard, ribbed grip and lion-head pommel, blade cleaned with blinded pitting (some deep), no scabbard

Provenance: This type of sword did not receive an official pattern designation but were the only British Army sawback pioneer sword before the introduction of the Pattern 1856. Harvey Withers in his book "British Military Swords: 1786-1912" lists this sword as a c.1830 Pioneer private's sawback sword. Brian Robson in Swords of the British Army, also lists this as a pioneer sword, but suggests it may have been carried between 1843 and 1845, as this is the only saw-backed sword known to have been produced in any quantity, prior to the P1856
