A 10-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN OF PIGEON STYLE, serial no. 8439,
for 1871, with 32in. damascus barrels, the raised top-rib signed 'J. PURDEY 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET, LONDON', borderline engraving to rib-end at breech, platinum line and vented plugs, borderline engraved locks signed 'PURDEY', borderline engraved dolphin head hammers, chequered walnut half-stock with iron furniture, no provision for ramrod, older refinish, now faded and rubbed, together with a published volume 'Purdey's' by Richard Beaumont and two letters from Purdey giving details of the shotgun


Provenance: As well as the included letters, this shotgun is mentioned in Patrick Unsworth's publication 'The Early Purdeys' as being a 32in. 10-bore made in 1871 'with no engraving, only a line'. No further details are known
