A .50 PERCUSSION CAPPING BREECH-LOADING CARBINE, MODEL 'SMITHS PATENT', serial no. 8245,
circa 1864, with 21 1/2in. blued two-stage sighted barrel struck with the letters 'L.F.R.' on the left side at the breech, blued locking bar, case-hardened action signed 'MANUFACTURED BY AM'N. M'CH'N. WKS. SPRINGFIELD. MASS.', 'ADDRESS POULTNEY & TRIMBLE BALTIMORE. U.S.A.' and 'SMITH'S PATENT JUNE 23 1857', iron saddle-bar with ring, walnut half-stock with inspector's mark on the left side of the grip, brass triggered barrel release, blued trigger-guard, and much original finish throughout.
