R. BURNAND, NEWCASTLE
A FINE CASED 14-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING-GUN, no visible serial number,
circa 1850, with browned damascus 30in. barrels, the top-rib signed 'BURNAND, PILGRIM ST. NEWCASTLE ON TYNE', silver bead fore-sight, colour-hardened breeches engraved with borders and a partridge to the rib-end, fully engraved platinum plugs, borderline, scroll and shell engraved top-tang, white-metal breech-plated to stock, border, scroll and game-scene engraved bar-action colour-hardened locks featuring hunting dogs flushing gamebirds, fully scroll engraved slab-sided dolphin-headed hammers, highly figured chequered walnut half-stock with gold shield-shaped escutcheon to the wrist engraved with a 'J.M.' monogram, iron heel-plate engraved with scrolls and a gamescene to the top-spur, border and scroll engraved trigger-guard, the bow engraved with a pair of hunting dogs, acanthus leaf engraved stylised pineapple finial, scroll engraved ramrod throat, original brass mounted mahogany ramrod, the whole retaining much original finish and colour; TOGETHER WITH a period oak storage case by the same manufacturer possibly for this gun (barrel compartment re-blocked for these barrels), compartmented and lined in blue baize, gold-blocked black leather trade label to 'RICH'D BURNAND, GUNMAKER, PILGRIM STREET, NEWCASTLE ON TYNE', and retaining an embossed 'Eley Bros.' cap-tin, a wad-punch, nickel oil-bottle and cleaning and loading rods, with lidded compartment for flasks and space for loading tools (missing), the outer lid with ring handle and centre escutcheon engraved 'J.M.' (lock missing, side hooks present), the case in excellent condition with its original leather protective outer sleeve (worn)
