Product Details

DICKINSON, LONDON
A POSSIBLY UNIQUE .758 PERCUSSION RIFLED MUSKET FOR THE EAST INDIA COMPANY, MODEL 'ALTERED PATTERN 1842'
no visible serial number and bearing the East India Company date letter for 1848, with blued round 39in. barrel, pyramid fore-sight, ladder rear-sight of Minie style, borderline engraved lock stamped with the 'E.I.C. Co.' rampant lion trademark, walnut full-stock, the side cheek stamped 'DICKINSON, MINORIES, LONDON', the 'DICKINSON' repeated behind the trigger-guard tang, brass furniture, three flat iron barrel keys and iron ramrod with unusual squared shank at tip, the whole in fine original condition

Other Notes: This musket would appear to be a one-off, possibly set up to try and solicit orders from the newly formed East India Government who were seeking to update their smoothbored guns. This rifle conforms to the British 'Altered Pattern '42' which was produced alongside the newly developed Pattern 1851 Minie and was almost certainly copied from it. Difficulty with the minie bullet caused the East India Government to adopt and manufacture the Brunswick Rifle (q.v.) as their Pattern 1864 instead
