A MOST UNUSUAL .50 PERCUSSION BREECH-LOADING SINGLE-SHOT PISTOL, MODEL 'MAYNARD'S PATENT', no visible serial number,
apparently professionally cut-down and altered from a Maynard's Patent civil war carbine, with octagonal to round 8 1/4in. tilt-down barrel, applied brass crescent fore-sight, blanked off rear-sight dove-tail, the breech marked 'W.D.W.' above an anchor device (possibly spurious), the left side of breech marked with inspectors initials 'G.W.S.', open iron frame marked on the left 'EDWARD MAYNARD PATENTEE' above 1851 & 1859 patent dates, the right side marked 'MANUFACTURED BY MASS. ARMS. Co. CHICOPEE FALLS', moulded top to standing breech with off-set nipple, central hammer with off-set head, blanked off holes for a saddle-bar, walnut pistol-grip, iron back and front straps and shaped underlever laying flush with front-strap, no provision for fore-end, in the white finish with some mild staining
