Product Details

A RARE 56/50 (SPENCER RIMFIRE) WARNERS PATENT SINGLE SHOT BREECH LOADING CARBINE, serial no. 2062, circa 1865, with 20 in, barrel stamped with London proofs having a block and blade front-sight and incorrect ladder rearsight, brass breech stamped on the left "GREENE RIFLE WORKS, / WORCESTER MASS. / PAT'D. 1864", and numbered 2062, two piece walnut stock, the butt with brass butt-cap, half forend with one spring retained barrel band. The carbine in sleepy untouched condition, with two small chips out of butt where it joins action, the barrel to a grey / brown patina lightly rusted over. The system was patented in USA by James Warner in 1864 and features a hinged breech block with a locking catch operating on a similar principle to the Snider. It is believed that approx. 4000 were made circa 1864 to 1865, 2500 by the Greene Rifle Works for James Warner who sold then to the U.S. government. Issues were made to the 3rd Mass. and 1st Wisc, cavalry regiments, by 1870 most had been sold off by the government as surplus to a well know New York dealer who immediately resold them to France for use in the Franco-Prussian War. Numbers are known with London proofs the significance of which is not known.
