A RARE 56/52 (SPENCER RIMFIRE) BRITISH ISSUE STARR MODEL 1864 CAVALRY CARBINE, serial no. 37402 circa 1865, with 20 3/4 in. barrel, stamped with the opposed arrows government sale mark, block and blade front-sight, two leaf hinged battle-sight, the action stamped "STARR'S PATENT / SEPTEMBER 1864", back-action lock stamped "STARR ARMS CO. / YONKERS N.Y." two piece iron mounted walnut stock the forend with one spring retained barrel band, the right butt with very faint "W.D." stamp. The original Starr capping breech loading system was redesigned accept the 56/52 Spencer rimfire cartridge, the US government purchased 5000. It is a little known fact the British War Dept. also purchased a quantity estimated at 350 for issue in Canada, of which this is one. The barrel and action to a grey patina some rust and pitting overall, stock cracked and repaired at wrist, but a very rare British military carbine
