A .38 PERCUSSION RING-TRIGGER PEPPERBOX PISTOL BY JOSEPH ROCK COOPER, CIRCA 1850, no visible serial number,
with 3 1/2in. six shot Birmingham proofed barrel cluster, each barrel separated with a concave rib with horizontally positioned nipples, round borderline engraved action body with foliate engraving and on the left inscribed in a lined panel the legend 'J. R. COOPER'S / PATENT' , based on the Belgian Mariette system, it features a self cocking mechanism operated by a ring trigger with an underhammer, fitted with two piece walnut grips, cleaned overall with some areas of pitting

Provenance: Joseph Rock Cooper obtained numerous patents relating to firearms, many of the early ones circa 1838 to 1850 relating to pepperbox pistols. Along with Joseph Bentley of Birmingham and Liverpool, J. R. Cooper may be regarded as the principal designer and manufacturer of British pepperbox revolvers. Later in partnership with John Dent Goodman as Cooper & Goodman the partnership became one of the dominant forces of the Birmingham gun trade in managing government contracts and the establishment of the Birmingham Small Arms Co.
