A RARE AND IMPORTANT .577 PERCUSSION MONT STORM TRIALS PATTERN BREECH-LOADING ARTILLERY CARBINE, serial no. 11,
from the British Government Trials of 1864, with blued 21 3/4in. barrel (numbered 274 at breech and on bayonet lug), shallow block and blade fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight with two additional folding leaves, plain receiver with faceted lift-up breech-block marked on the top face 'MONT STORM'S PATENT', the underside of block engraved 'F.A. BRAENDLIN FECIT 1863', engraved number '11' to front of top-tang, borderline engraved lock marked 'TOWER' below '1863' and with a crown over 'V.R.' device at tail, chained nipple protector, walnut three-quarter stock with Tower roundel stamped to right side of butt, brass furniture except two iron barrel bands and jag-ended iron ramrod, fine condition and appearing little used

Provenance: This rare carbine was one of 24 arms submitted for the 1864 Government trials. The aim was to seek the best conversion to breech-loading of the current Enfield group of arms. The offerings submitted by Mont Storm were broken down as follows:
6x Cavalry Carbines Numbered 1 to 6
6x Artillery Carbines Numbered 7 to 12
6x Enfield Rifles Numbered 1 to 6 (with long butt)
6x Enfield Rifles Numbered 7 to 12 (with short butt)
Initially, 50 designs by various manufacturers were put forward but only 8 were selected as being practical. Of these 8, only 5 actually arrived for the test; capping breech loaders by Mont Storm, Wilson, Greene and Westley Richards. The other applicant was Snider with the only cartridge example in the test.
The result of the trial is contained in report no. 3266, Committee Minute no. 11466 of April 4th 1864

This carbine was previously in the collection of the late Mr Peter Banwell before being sold to the vendor via Wallis & Wallis in May 1983
