A 12-BORE SINGLE-TRIGGER EASY-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 4556,
for 1899, 30in. replacement Whitworth-steel nitro chopperlump barrels (by the makers circa 1923, barrel number 7065), the rib gold-inlaid '3*' at the breech end and engraved 'BOSS & CO. 13, DOVER STREET. PICCADILLY. LONDON. W.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, toplever gold-inlaid '3', automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, rolled-edge triggerguard, best fine acanthus scroll engraving with floral bouquets, the action bar with 'BOSS'S PATENT' to the sides, the underside with improved single trigger patent details, retaining traces of colour-hardening, 14 5/8in. highly-figured stock including 1/2in. wooden extension, weight 6lb. 12oz.
Provenance: The makers records state that the gun was ordered on April 28th 1899 as one of 'a set of 3 12-bore top snap h'less guns ejectors', serial numbers 4554/5/6 for Earl Crewe
