A RARE FINEST QUALITY 11-BORE SINGLE-BARRELLED FOWLING PIECE, no visible serial number,
circa 1855, with 30in. browned variegated twist barrel signed in gold 'W.L. GORDON, MAKER, SUNDERLAND', the twist-pattern of the barrel straightening for the length of the signature, silver fore-sight bead set at the tip of a panel of engraved scrolls, squared patent breech with twin gold lines and platinum plug stamped with a crown, short, fully scroll engraved sighting rib terminating in an engraved needle surmounted by a stricken gamebird, the sighting rib mirrored by similar engraved panels either side of the breech, double scrolled and bolstered nipple-snail, fully border and scroll engraved top-tang, fully border and scroll engraved bar-action lock signed in a ribbon 'W.L. GORDON' and featuring a vignette of two gamebirds in an oval panel at the tail, carved and scroll engraved hammer with carved scroll accent to the nose, highly figured chequered walnut straight-hand stock (some scratches to the french-polished finish), blued iron heel-plate with scroll engraved long top-spur featuring a panel engraved with a hunting dog, gold shield-shaped escutcheon engraved with 'J.y.s. FROM G.h.r. 1898', scroll engraved blued iron trigger-guard tang, iron trigger-guard bow engraved with a further hunting dog, scroll engraved pineapple finial, scroll engraved ball-ended take-down wedge escutcheons, shaped horn fore-end tip, white-metal mounted mahogany ramrod, scroll engraved ramrod throat and two plain thimbles, the whole retaining much original finish and colour throughout and appearing little used
Other Notes: William Lister Gordon first appeared in Sunderland in 1854 and traded from 137 High Street between 1855 to 1859 when his name disappears from the records
