A FINE POWELL 1864 PATENT 16-BORE BAR-IN-WOOD LIFT-UP TOPLEVER ROTATING SINGLE BOLT SNAP-ACTION HAMMERGUN, serial no. 6500,
28in. nitro reproved bold damascus barrels, rib engraved 'W. RICHARDS. 27. OLDHALL STREET. LIVERPOOL.' and carved with a shell motif at the breech end, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, William Powell barrel number 5845, incorporating William Powell patent lift-up toplever engraved with a partridge and with a roundel inscribed 'POWELL'S PATENT', patent no. 1163 of 7th May 1864, use number 1742, bar-in-wood, carved serpentine fences with Powell patent gold-inlaid 'Loaded' indicators, patent no. 1055 of 1869, rebounding sidelocks with swept hammers of hare's-ear form, fine acanthus scroll engraving with crosshatch bordering and with game scenes of spaniels, wildfowl, pointers and hare, the triggerguard engraved with a scene of a lone gun and his hound flushing partridge, brushed finish overall, 14 3/8in. well-figured pistolgrip stock with engraved steel pistolgrip-cap and engraved steel heel and toe plates, the heel plate engraved with the serial number, Deeley & Edge patent fore-end release catch and horn finial, weight 6lb. 3oz., in its leather bound oak lined case with some accessories
Provenance: The vendor has kindly supplied us with a copy of the entry in the William Powell record books, dated 4th August 1876 where this gun is recorded as being made for Mr W. Richards as:
"1 patent action central fire breech-loader with damascus barrels, 28in. long, No.16 cartridge (old boring), patent strikers, rebounding locks, 'D' spring forend bolt, pistol hand stock, toe & heel bits, game engraving, fit hardened to No. 6500" at a cost of £18, the 'extra for pistol hand' costing a further 10- , an extra 5- for the fore-end bolt and 1.6 for the 'box', to make a total of £18.16.6
