Product Details

COLT, USA
A RARE .44-40 (WIN) LEVER-ACTION REPEATING RIFLE, MODEL 'COLT-BURGESS', serial no. 2192,
manufactured between 1883 and 1885, with blued octagonal 25 1/2in. barrel, nickel blade fore-sight, buckhorn rear-sight, the top-flat signed 'COLT'S PT FA MFG CO. HARTFORD CT. USA' with patent dates beneath to 1882, stepped flat-sided receiver with rounded top and ejection port (traces of colour), external hammer, top-tang with provision for aperture sight, walnut butt-stock with crescent heel-plate fitted with a central sliding trap-door, blued finger-lever marked 'BURGESS PATENTS', walnut fore-end with colour-hardened nose-cap and full-length under-barrel magazine tube, the whole retaining a strong amount of finish

Other Notes: Colt's only attempt at a lever action rifle, the Burgess was produced to complete the product line and allow Colt to offer pistols, rifles and shotguns of all types. Winchester were not amused, and responded by producing a line of prototype revolving handguns that might just go into production if Colt continued with the Burgess. Colt decided that discretion was the better part of valour and immediately discontinued the rifle; Winchester acknowledged this and did not take their revolvers beyond the prototype stage. Only 6403 Colt-Burgess rifles were produced across all models and calibres, with 2521 being the rifle represented here.
