A .36 MANHATTAN NAVY TYPE 4TH MODEL SINGLE ACTION PERCUSSION REVOLVER, CIRCA 1865, serial no 58241,
with 6 1/2in. octagonal barrel, top flat stamped 'MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS CO. NEWARK, N.J. / PATENTED MARCH 8 1864', five shot cylinder etched with scene, one piece walnut grips, all matching numbers, made circa 1865 (a late Civil War revolver)
Provenance: The Manhattan .36 revolver bears a close resemblance to the Colt Model 1851 Navy, and also to the .31 Colt Model 1849 Pocket, its size being between the two. It featured its own advantages, and that fact was a major reason for the weapons considerable sales success with approx. 78,000 produced 1859-58
