A SCARCE 54-BORE PERCUSSION SOLID FRAME WEBLEY TYPE REVOLVER SIGNED D. HUGHES, CEYLON, serial no. 5148,
circa 1858, with 6in. octagonal barrel rifled in multiple grooves, borderline engraved solid frame, the top-strap signed 'D. HUGHES CEYLON' plain five-shot cylinder with engraved band to leading edge, polished hammer and trigger, chequered walnut grips, guarded trigger and Kerr-style rammer mounted to the left side, strong traces of finish
Provenance: By comparison to the 'wedge-frame' model, very few percussion solid frame revolvers were produced by Webley. At the time of production, the whole revolver scene was undergoing enormous changes to the new self contained metallic cartridges of rim, centre and even pinfire types. Many of these revolvers were issued with two cylinders, one for percussion and the other for cartridges and as a consequence very few percussion examples survive
