'J. PURDEY' 12-BORE ROTARY-UNDERLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 5490, circa 1858, converted from muzzle-loader, 30in. black powder damascus barrels (pitted), rib spuriously engraved 'J. PURDEY & SONS. 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET. LONDON.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, Jones patent rotary underlever, carved percussion fences, non-rebounding locks (right hammer ear broken), border and partial scroll engraving, lockplates spuriously engraved 'J. PURDEY', retaining virtually full renewed colour-hardening and finish, 14 1/2in. figured replacement stock, weight 7lb., in a brass-cornered oak and leather case

Provenance: 'The Early Purdeys' by Unsworth lists gun serial no. 5490 as being sold in July 1858, and converted to centre fire in 1869
