F. DAVIE 12-BORE BOXLOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 1180, circa 1892, 28 1/8in. sleeved steel to damascus barrels, the rib engraved F. DAVIE. ELGIN', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. and full choke, treble-grip action, automatic safety (missing 'SAFE' insert), intercepting sears, fine border and acanthus scroll engraving, the sides signed 'F. DAVIE' and with recessed steel decorative sideplates with fine acanthus scrollwork with crosshatch bordering, brushed finish, 14 3/4in. well-figured stock including 3/4in. wooden extension, gold oval escutcheon initialled 'WG' and dated for 1892, bolstered fore-end, wear to chequering, weight 6lb. 12oz., in a brass-cornered canvas case
Provenance: In the guncase are copies of the invoicing for the sleeving and other work by John Macpherson & Sons dating to 1973. On the reverse of one is a hand-written précis of the history of the gun, beginning with the initial purchase from Davie in Elgin by a Major E.W. Gordon of the Gordon Highlanders.
