A 20-BORE POWELL 1864 PATENT BAR-IN-WOOD LIFT-UP TOPLEVER ROTATING SINGLE BOLT SNAP-ACTION HAMMERGUN, serial no. 5806,
29in. black powder only bold damascus barrels, rib engraved 'WILLIAM POWELL & SON, 13, CARR'S LANE, BIRMINGHAM.' and carved with a shell motif at the breech end, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, internally pitted, action incorporating William Powell patent lift-up toplever inscribed 'POWELL'S PATENT', patent no. 1163 of 7th May 1864, use number 1724, bar-in-wood, carved serpentine fences with Powell patent gold-inlaid 'Loaded' indicators, patent no. 1055 of 1869, rebounding sidelocks with swept hammers of hare's-ear form, fine acanthus scroll engraving with crosshatch bordering, brushed finish overall, 14 3/8in. well-figured stock with engraved steel buttplate, Powell provisional patent fore-end release catch, patent no. 2193 of 24th June 1873, weight 5lb. 14oz., in its canvas case

Provenance: The vendor has kindly supplied us with a copy of the entry in the William Powell record books, dated 29th August 1874 where this gun is recorded as being made for Mr W. Lont Esq. as:
"one best our patent action central fire breech-loader with best dam. barrels 29in. 19-bore, No. 20 cartridge, our patent strikers & rebounding locks, lever forend fastener, handsome stock thin and deep in grasp, large foresight & japanned canvas case" at a total cost of £33.13.9
