29in. fine damascus barrels, rib engraved 'J. PURDEY. 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET. LONDON.', open sights with three folding leaf sights, white metal inlaid sight lines and marked for 50, 150, 200 and 250 yards, bead fore-sight, action with side-clips, carved percussion fences, non-rebounding back-action island locks with bolted dolphin hammers, underlever triggerguard with skeletal pistolgrip and incorporating a grip safety, best fine acanthus scroll engraving, retaining traces of original colour-hardening, 14 3/8in. well-figured stock (splits at toe) with cheekpiece, sling eyes and including chequered steel buttplate, weight 9lb. 7lb.
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed in 1872 as 'a centre fire .40 bore breech loading double rifle' for Mr Patterson
