A RARE AND UNUSUAL 40-BORE THUMB-TRIGGER BOXLOCK POCKET-PISTOL, no visible serial number,
circa 1790, with round slightly tapering 2 3/4in. iron barrel, rounded breech with private proofs, engraved squared boxlock action signed in a banner on the left hand side 'COLLIS', and 'OXFORD' in an oval on the right, no provision for a conventional trigger to the floorplate, central hammer with sliding safe operating around the sides and also locking the frizzen down over the rainproof pan, thumb operated push-catch trigger mounted to the top-tang behind the safe and slab-sided walnut butt with oval escutcheon to rear
