A SCARCE 16-BORE 1879 PATENT SIDELOCK NON-EJECTOR, serial no. 6954,
for 1880, 29 1/8in. nitro reproved (in 1956) blacked damascus barrels, the rib engraved 'MORTIMER & SONS. 86. GEORGE ST. EDINBURGH', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, some pits, rib loose, action incorporating Richard Ellis and Henry Scott patent barrel cocking action, patent no. 2816 of 10th July 1879, fluted fences, hump-back automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, characteristic shaped lockplates, fine acanthus scroll engraving with tendrils and with floral bordering, the underside with the Cornucopia, brushed and blued finish, 14 5/8in. figured stock including 5/16ths buttplate, flat front fore-end with diminutive horn finial and with Deeley & Edge patent release (minor loss to wood leading right edge), weight 6lb. 6oz.
