circa 1920 (see notes below), with No.1 weight blued octagonal 28in. barrel signed on the left side top-flat 'MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO., NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED OCTOBER 7. 1879', dove-tailed beaded blade fore-sight, the rear-sight deliberately cut to form a dove-tail blanking plate, calibre marking at breech, blued slab-sided falling block action (finish faded) fitted with a scarce period unsigned receiver bridge peep-sight (possibly Marbles), automatic cocking hammer, the top-tang marked 'REG. IN U.S. PAT. OFF' over 'WINCHESTER' and 'TRADE MARK', walnut butt-stock with crescent heel-plate, walnut splinter fore-end with ebony inlay at tip and fitted with eyelets for a Winchester sling
Provenance: Serial numbers allocated for the Model 1885 Winchester become quite random in 1920, with the last sequenced number being '115170'. Production officially ceased in this year, with the last few guns produced being allocated numbers between this number and the highest recorded '139700'. A large number of serial numbers were skipped
