AN INTERESTING BRASS-BARRELLED FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS PISTOL WITH SPRING BAYONET SIGNED WATERS & CO., serial no. 351,
circa 1785, with 7 1/2in. lightly swamped brass barrel with moulded bands to the muzzle, under mounted triangular bladed spring bayonet, one piece barrel and frame, the action body with decorated borders inscribed on the right 'WATERS & CO' and on the left 'PATENT' over 'No. 351', central ring-necked cock, one piece semi slab-sided walnut grip, double triggers, the front trigger discharging the gun and the second releasing the spring bayonet, iron trigger guard bow and side mounted brass-tipped wood ramrod
Provenance: The maker was John Waters of Birmingham in business circa 1766 to 1788, who is generally credited as being the inventor of the spring bayonet, he was granted British Patent No. 1284 of 9th March 1781 for attaching bayonets to pistols, William Grice contested the claim saying it was his invention but the patent stood. John Waters died on 7th February 1788
