bearing London hallmarks for 1757, with 40in. two-stage swamped Spanish barrel (some frosting) with silver spider fore-sight, turned girdle and struck at the breech with two gold-lined makers marks, one for Juan Fernandez, moulded sighting groove to top-tang, border and scroll engraved flat bevelled lock (cock repaired at neck) with sliding safety and semi-rainproof pan with water drain, figured walnut half-stock (numerous defects) carved in low relief with scrollwork and a shell behind the barrel-tang, silver mounts including trigger-guard with shell and foliage finial and pierced side-plate, the latter incomplete, horn fore-end cap, and later ramrod, private Birmingham proof marks
