M. & I. PATTISON, DUBLIN
A RARE 8-BORE FLINTLOCK CARBINE FOR BALL WITH SPECIAL BAYONET, no visible serial number,
circa 1835, with octagonal blending to round heavy 17in. smoothbore barrel, the last 4in. reduced for the bayonet and fitted with a substantial locking lug also forming the fore-sight, the top-flat at breech signed 'M. & I. PATTISON DUBLIN' within a borderline forming a steeple terminating in a floral spray, engraved bands at breech, border and scroll engraved long top-tang extending almost to the comb, flat lock with engraved borderlines and floral details and signed 'M. & I. PATTISON' below the semi rainproof pan, engraved swan-necked cock, roller frizzen, stepped tail, walnut three-quarter stock chequered at the wrist (cracked through and repaired at hand), brass furniture including engraved trap to top-rear of comb concealing two cavities for shot or patches, large trigger guard bow with raised lower tang and brass mounted mahogany ramrod, white metal escutcheon to left side-cheek monogrammed 'P.P', together with its substantial socket-bayonet with heavy-gauge flaring socket allowing its use as an improvised dagger, rotating socket lock, the blade of elliptical leaf form
Provenance: Mark and John Pattison of Dublin were registered at 17 Crampton Court, Dublin until around 1850. They were contracted to ordnance as well as producing duelling pistols and other exotics. It is probable that this carbine was intended for hunting dangerous game rather than personal protection
