A .577-450 (M/H) SINGLE-SHOT SPORTING-RIFLE, MODEL 'MARTINI-HENRY', serial no. 406,
circa 1890, with 28 1/2in. barrel, applied matted top-rib signed 'ROBERT HUGHES & SONS, MAKERS, LONDON & BIRMINGHAM' and 'METFORD RIFLING', provision for dove-tailed fore-sight (missing), 'African' multiple-leaf rear-sight (missing its additional ladder sight), machine engraved receiver with geometric border design, both sides signed within a centrally positioned engraved banner 'HUGHES', chequered walnut pistol-grip butt-stock (drilled at wrist for later peep-sight, missing), replacement heel-plate, chequered splinter fore-end with carved horn nose-cap and provision for sling.
