first quarter of the 20th century, with shortened octagonal 23in. barrel, the top-flat signed with the maker's address and patent dates to 1893, the left hand side marked 'SPECIAL SMOKELESS STEEL', dove-tailed beaded blade fore-sight, buckhorn rear-sight, slab-sided receiver, the top marked 'MARLIN SAFETY' and tapped for a receiver sight, the top-tang marked 'MODEL 1893' and tapped for a tang-sight (all with keeper screws), walnut butt-stock with iron crescent heel-plate, iron finger-lever, plain walnut fore-end and three-quarter length magazine (also probably shortened), traces of finish only
