A RARE BOWKETT-TUNED .22 ANSCHUTZ 335 BREAK-BARREL AIR RIFLE, serial no. 50598,
one of a small number so converted in the early 1980's, with blued 18 1/2in. barrel, manual breech-lock (tunnel fore-sight and rear-sight absent), blued air-chamber with applied 'BOWKETT' decal (lettering rubbed off but legible), dove-tail for telescopic sight with twin arrestor block holes, factory beech half-stock and much original finish throughout
Provenance: Despite being dominant in small-bore match rifles, Anschutz were somewhat the poor relation when it came to adult sporting air rifles. When compared to its major rival, Weihrauch, the Anschutz was a little lacking in the power stakes and fell well behind the likes of Feinwerkbau and even BSF. In stepped John Bowkett, a name familiar to many UK air-gunners and the man responsible for many designs of successful pneumatic air rifles. At the time he was famous for managing to get 12 ft.-lb. (the UK legal power limit) out of BSA's youth air rifle, the Meteor, a fact many thought impossible so the Anschutz 335 proved no problem. Sadly, the initial purchase price of the Anschutz, plus the tuning costs made it an uneconomic exercise, most finding it easier to just go and buy a Weihrauch HW35 or 80 in the first place, or if weight was an issue, a Feinwerkbau
